Ahh, welcome to the Convolution den of arcane technology!
We at Convolution are quite proud of technology and science of what we do, not the least of which is our supportive technologies that help us facilitate as many game players as possible!
Currently the most innovative elements of our technical approach come in our 3 core code packages:
- The Convolution Core Framework - The foundation of all our games, a C# based code framework, designed to extend our chosen game engine, Unity, to allow us to rapidly develop new game titles and improve the stability and support of all our games.
- The Convolution Natural Interactions Framework - The very flexible usability framework that is designed to bridge the gap between our games and the people that play them. Using this framework we have many tools to help address gameplay interactions, game-to-person communication, and facilitate a wide variety of hearing, visual, and physical needs. Some in the industry have asked us "why go to such lengths?", to which we happily respond, "why not?". From our perspective not supporting all people is to place less value on the people part of life. Oh, and it turns out people with special needs spend the same kind of money as everyone else... but don't tell the other game makers :)
- The Convolution Player Assist AI - This is the crown jewels of our technology stack. At it's core the CPA-AI is a game Artificial Intelligence, encompassing both Navigation and Decision elements of our games. Oh it's a little more complex than some others and designed to fit many of our game project needs, but it's what else it does that makes it our pride and joy. In our experience, the hardest special needs groups to support are those with mental capacities outside of the "established norms". Now, I know what you're thinking, but that's actually a two-way street. Most video games are developed to address the widest possible audience, namely those who's mental processing (amongst other attributes) is well within the normal ranges. Well, that leaves two perfectly unhappy groups watching from the outside as others have fun. Both those who's capacity leads to greater challenges (and even barriers) to achieving like their peers, and those who quickly decipher the challenges and are left less fulfilled.
Either way... that ain't right!
The Convolution Player Assist AI is our answer. For those with challenges, the Player Assist AI observes the player's choices and compares that to 1) a database of standard achievement and 2) what it would have done. When the player has demonstrated great difficulty, it makes adjustments to various elements of the game to facilitate a gameplay mode where the player is still challenged, but able to achieve success. Now, conversely, if the player "runs away with the show", the Player Assist AI will happily "dial up the challenges", this allows our games to have a longer entertainment value to players by increasing the challenges when the player is demonstrating they are ready to step up the difficulty. We think that's pretty cool :)
Now we don't pull this stuff out of thin air, all our technologies are based upon proven patterns and designs, where they pre-exist, and the most modern research in the various academic, technical, and medical fields. Yes, to answer that unspoken question of yours, we do a LOT of reading and talking with leading professionals and researchers in a variety fields to make our tools the best possible.
We also use mature design and development processes modeled after those in use by some of the world leaders in software design and development. Naturally, our Game Business Toolbox templates play an important role in our operation, ensuring consistency in our game designs and making sure we don't miss any obvious steps as we go about making the next great game.
